Maximising The Recovery Of Magnetic Medium
Specifically intended for use
in DMS plants, the Permax separator from Multotec
Magnetics provides increased capacity, improved
performance and requires minimal maintenance. It
comprises a drum-encased permanent magnet
arrangement combined with a specially designed
counter rotation tank.
Dr Arno Steinmuller, general manager at Multotec
Magnetics (Pty) Ltd, says that the main objective in
a DMS plant is to recover the maximum amount of
magnetic medium at the highest possible density.
“This means that a wet drum separator’s
configuration should provide a high magnetic flux
density and gradient at the feed point and the drum
surface should have a smooth flux profile.” |
The Permax separator achieves all
these requirements through a flux concentration effort as a
result of the ferrite magnets sandwiched between steel poles
in a radial pole arrangement.
Steinmuller explains that this
specific arrangement has definite advantages over both the
Gauss IP magnet assembly and the Gauss ‘High Gradient’
magnet assembly.
“The Permax
separator’s assembly is designed to produce high magnetic
flux density and gradient close to the drum surface (working
zone) instead of at a distance from this surface. One
notable benefit of this includes a high volume flow rate of
up to 160 m3/h per metre drum width,” he says.
Steinmuller points out
that in addition, high magnetic loadings of 30 tph per metre
drum width have been recorded with a concomitant increase in
efficiency of 99.90% for magnetite recovery and 99.95% for
ferrosilicon recovery.
The Permax separator can be provided in two hydraulic
configurations, dependent on customer requirements. The
counter-rotation configuration is recommended for medium
recovery in DMS plants. “It is optimised for maximum
recovery and highest throughput in such plants and has the
capacity to process high feed solids concentrations,”
Steinmuller explains.
The current flow configuration is particularly suitable for
applications where high magnetic product purity is required,
such as magnetite ore beneficiation.
“All machines are equipped with low maintenance, operator
friendly effluent outlets and level control via an
adjustable overflow weir. This configuration provides a high
tolerance of feed rate fluctuations,” Steinmuller says.
The dual effluent system allows for high concentrations of
coarse and non-magnetic contaminants such as grit to be
processed and at the same time produces a clarified water
stream suitable for direct recirculation to the rinse
screen. “This offers the potential for significantly
improved medium recovery and provides economy of water
usage, making it an environmentally friendly choice,”
Steinmuller concludes. |
