Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) from Longi-Multotec combine magnetism, a pulsating slurry and gravity to para-magnetic materials. Applications include ilmenite, chrome, manganese and iron ore (haematite) beneficiation, PGM upgrading as well as chrome and manganese recovery from slimes dams. This offers innovative new approaches and technology for solving para-magnetic minerals separation processes that are as efficient as they are cost-effective.
Magnetic separators that used permanent magnets could generate fields of low intensity only. These worked well in removing ferrous tramp but not fine para-magnetic particles. High intensity magnetic separators focus on the separation of very fine particles that are para-magnetic.
The current is passed through the coil, which creates a magnetic field. This magnetises the expanded steel matrix ring. The para-magnetic matrix material behaves like a magnet and attracts the fines. The ring is rinsed when it is in the magnetic field and all the non-magnetic particles are carried with the rinse water. This technology also employs unparalleled high gradients, within their exchangeable matrices, to allow recovery of fine material down to 15 micron.
The WHIMS was specially adapted by Multotec to accommodate the demands of the African environment. This has resulted in highly specialised magnetic separation equipment that complements and enhances Multotec’s existing solution offering.

The Longi-Multotec wet high intensity magnetic separator (LGS WHIMS) delivers a high-efficiency fine iron recovery, para-magnetic ore beneficiation and non-magnetic ore purification solution to maximise the extraction of abrasive ferrous particles from your process stream and slurries.
The WHIMS has an optimised coil surface area for exposure to the air. It can be cooled directly with cooling water rather than environmentally unfriendly cooling oils used in older generation models. The need for advanced water treatment systems, water cooling towers, excessive heavy current power cables and electrical infrastructure can be reduced or eliminated.
The machines are also operated with ampere-control (instead of voltage control) which allows a constant energy supply to the coil for consistent metallurgical performance.
Although WHIMS is a well-known and proven technology across a range of commodity sectors, its use in the recovery of fine chromite is fairly new. With the Longi-Multotec WHIMS, the chrome is removed and a saleable product recovered.
The WHIMS can recover particles down to a fraction size as small as 5 microns. Particle sizes as small as 80% passing 30 microns have been recovered (that is finer than the diameter of a 40 micron human hair).
