Creating a Sustainable Food Centre for Rustenburg Community
Maintaining a garden year-round is a challenge for schools, especially over the school breaks when gardens are left unattended. But it is a different story for Mothlabe Primary School and Kgalatlowe High School in Rustenburg. The parents and community members who live near these schools have stepped in to assist with caretaking of the gardens. In exchange, these community members were invited to take home some of the harvested vegetables.
Multotec, working together with the non-profit organisation, Education is Our Future, has created employment opportunities for the members of this Rustenburg community. Community members working in the garden are now able to sell the harvest to earn some money. Disadvantaged households are being supported with fresh vegetables and the schools are also benefitting as the produce grown is used to make hot soup for the school children. 
The gardens are well-maintained and, each year after harvest time, the garden waste, food, and other natural wastes are recycled to be used again as organic fertiliser. When fruits and vegetables have matured, seeds are collected and stored to be used again to grow the plants.
