Diversity and inclusivity at Multotec

Sibusiso Ntwana, Business Unit Manager, Multotec Manufacturing, shares diversity and inclusion practices.

This topic is taken from the presentation that was done at Our Multotec Way Town Hall event, held on 13 October 2021. It was led by me, alongside Thembisile Mvemve, Amanda Jonker, and Andreas Hecht. The theme was: "We support each other in all we say and do. We are passionate about inclusivity and diversity because we know that this supports our vision to be courageous pioneers."

Definition of Diversity:  On a personal level, the diversity of an individual is defined by his or her cultural and personal differences, as well as life and professional experiences. At the organisational level, diversity is created through the distinct personalities and capabilities of each individual within the group. Taken together, the diversity of individuals and organisations creates an environment where innovation and ideas flourish.

Definition of Inclusivity: The practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalised, such as those
having physical or mental disabilities or belonging to other minority groups.

Benefits of Diversity and Inclusivity:

  • Employee satisfaction
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Financial results
  • Shareholder value
  • Job security
  • Growth
  • Healthier communities

Remember, inclusion is ongoing. It isn’t enough to teach employees what it means to be inclusive. Like any form of behavioural change, inclusion requires individuals to identify key moments in which to build new habits or “micro behaviours” (daily actions that can be practiced and measured). And when these habits are put into action in an environment that supports honest conversations and healthy tension, real change becomes possible.

One way to do this is to identify change cohorts within the organisation outside of the executive or management level. Then, you equip them with the skills and information to help them champion change within their departments, teams, or working groups. This is much more effective than once-off training sessions which don’t move the needle; you want people to incorporate these ideas and beliefs into their daily lives.
