Gaining Perspective through the Wheelchair Challenge

Multotec’s recent participation in the Wheelchair Challenge on 16 March offered a powerful, first-hand perspective on accessibility, inclusion, and the everyday realities faced by people with disabilities.

For Este, one of the most eye-opening aspects was navigating the workplace environment. Simple tasks, like accessing bathrooms or moving through narrow doorways, quickly became significant challenges. The experience highlighted how the current infrastructure can unintentionally exclude individuals with mobility impairments.

Beyond physical barriers, the challenge also revealed social perceptions. Being in a wheelchair drew unexpected attention, reinforcing how people with disabilities are often viewed differently. This sparked important reflections on inclusivity and leadership, emphasising the value of diverse perspectives in the workplace.

A key takeaway was the need for improved accessibility, particularly more disability-friendly bathrooms and parking facilities across sites. These changes, while practical, represent a broader commitment to inclusion.

Nadine Mason (Senior Development Officer at Little Eden) highlighted that the initiative also aims to raise awareness for Little Eden and shift societal perceptions—encouraging people to see ability before disability. The experience ultimately challenged participants to step out of their comfort zones, think differently, and consider how businesses can create more inclusive environments.
