Innovation: Getting the flow going with Multotec’s Drop-in TIVAR® 88 liner

Material flow is a critical part of mineral processing, and it is therefore essential that the appropriate liner is selected, not only to improve material flow but to eliminate unplanned downtime.

A Ferrochrome smelter in Limpopo was having material flow problems on the hopper feeding fine chrome material to the silos. Their biggest challenge was material build-up in the corners of the hopper, which necessitated an operator to manually remove the material.

The build-up of chrome material on the valley angles of the hoppers was determined to be the result of high moisture content on the chrome fines particles. The smelter was concerned that the problem would reduce the inside diameter of the hopper.

Multotec was contacted to provide an alternative liner “a flow-promoting liner”. Together with the smelter we proposed the design of a one-piece welded hopper liner fabricated from 12 mm thick TIVAR® 88 material.

Drop-In liners improve flow whilst allowing a quick and simple installation of the liner. These liners rarely need more than a leading-edge protector to hold them in and work well in small- to medium-sized applications. Their one-piece construction allows for a time efficient installation with very few tools required. The Multotec team performed the installation in February 2022. The smelter is very pleased with the liner performance. The retardant properties of the liner material have eliminated concerns with material hang-ups.
