Multotec Services Kathu Celebrates 1 Year Injury Free
Safety at the various sites serviced from the Multotec Kathu branch achieved 1-year injury-free rating on 21 February 2020.
Following two LTIs (Lost Time Incidents) in one month during February 2017 at Sishen and Kolomela the change in safety attitude especially at Sishen has been remarkable.
Besides the obvious prevention of injuries to workers that can result in life-changing circumstances for themselves and their families, contracts can easily be terminated based on a company being a safety risk and therefore makes it vital that Multotec eliminates this possibility.
The Kathu team has really stepped up to the plate and zoned in on zero tolerance and made safety a personal and Kathu family matter.
In addition to this achievement, the last injury at Finsch Diamond mine was in 2008 and at CTP Kimberley 2014. This is an amazing record and credit must go to the respective teams.
Safety practices over the last 2 years at various sites include:
• Promoting walk-talk-live safety attitude
• Always working with a helper (buddy system)
• Daily morning safety discussions
• Continuous drive of Section 23 rights of employees
• Pre-safety assessments and hazard identifications before any task is carried out
• Safety campaigns especially over the “silly season”
• A general safety campaign with a prominent slogan on all hardhats at Sishen
• Regular Stop for Safety sessions
• Safety involvement, contributions and responsibility by each individual through MDW
• Continuous training to improve knowledge and know-how
• Yearly in-house inductions covering all SWP’s and policies after the December shutdown
• Continuous improvement of safety practices and procedures including new innovations
