By: Daniel Smith, Field Service Manager, Secunda
It came as bit of a surprise that I was asked to write an article for the March 2021 edition of Grapevine – after all, this edition marks the anniversary month of several significant events for the Multotec Services Secunda branch and the world at large.
It has been a full year since the lockdown was implemented in South Africa; what’s more, I will be starting my 11th year with Multotec; and it’s a full year since the Multotec Secunda Branch became part of Multotec Services.
Multotec Services Secunda, formerly known as Multotec Wear Linings (MWL) Secunda, has gone through a lot of changes in the past year. From the retirement of Cliff Snyman (leaving large shoes to be filled), to the appointment of new management at the branch, the implementation of a new reporting structure within Multotec, and new work processes too.
In spite of all the adjustments, the entire team at the Secunda branch have demonstrated their full commitment to Multotec Services, as well as to me and December Mabuza (Field Services Supervisor). We are grateful for their service, especially as we were the ‘newbies’, joining the branch from Multotec Middelburg.
Under the Multotec Services banner, we continue to provide services to Sasol Synfuels and Sasol Mining relating to the installation of tiles on the various plants, with several success stories to date. One of these successes was the tiling of the dome at Sasol West TAR Plant. The domes were sent for drawings and then the engineered tile sets were manufactured by MWL and installed at the Secunda branch. The completed domes impressed the client to the extent that they circulated photos of the domes to Sasol East TAR Plant.
We have managed to re-secure the cyclone refurbishments from the Twistdraai Export Plant and to date we have collected 11 cyclones, which were sent to the Middelburg branch for refurbishment, including steelwork repairs, cone replacements and tile work. Of the 11 cyclones, we have already delivered 3 back to Twistdraai.
We are continuing to do various shutdowns for Sasol, both in the plants and at the branch workshop. The tilers and supervisors are all committed to performing their work to the highest standards, as expected by Multotec.
Our goal is to improve Multotec’s footprint within the Secunda Sasol plant. This includes promoting the various products in the Multotec range and continuing to provide tile maintenance on a daily basis.
Both December and I wish to thank everyone who has assisted us in the transition from Middelburg to Secunda.
