The 11th World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB11) was held at Misty Hills Conference Centre, Muldersdrift, South Africa, from 21 to 23 May 2024. Multotec was a premium exhibitor and sponsor at the conference.
The SAIMM and the conference committee organised the event, attracting approximately 150 delegates from 18 countries. Over three days, fifty-four presentations were made by delegates, and five sponsors shared their expertise with the attendees.
With the theme “Diversity and Application of the Theory of Sampling,” the conference delved into the Theory of Sampling's profound influence on fields like economics, mining, industry, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals, where it supports vital decision-making.
These World Conferences have become a cornerstone for fostering international collaboration among the sampling community and interested professionals. The primary aim is to share knowledge on standardising practices within the Theory of Sampling, minimising variability and uncertainty, and enhancing the reliability and accuracy of sampling methods.
The conferences aim to preserve, promote, and advance the Theory of Sampling by providing a platform for researchers and practitioners to collaborate, share knowledge, and develop standardised methodologies and best practices.
The high quality of the technical program and presentations provides a strong, scientifically verified basis for the global sampling community to strive for analytical excellence, emphasising the importance of detecting and mitigating sampling errors.
Multotec was part of the organising committee of this conference, which was led by Chairpersons Terance Nkosi (Rand Refinery) and Richard Minnitt (WITS). Multotec also participated in the technical adjudication, review, and award decisions.
Presentations were also done by Clinton Bester and Bonginkosi Nkosi and focused on various topics.
Notably, Hulisani Madima won the Best Presenter award for his paper and presentation. Lastly, two women in mining, Dr Ana-Carolina Chieregati and Dr Claudia Paoletti, were awarded the Pierre Gy Sampling Gold Medal for their excellence in teaching and disseminating the Theory of Sampling.
