Multotec takes on the Little Eden Wheelchair Challenge
Bulelwa Mhlongo, Financial Manager: Multotec, accepted the Little Eden Wheelchair Challenge in March 2021. Challenge participants spend a full working day in a wheelchair.
“When I accepted the challenge, I wasn’t aware of what I was getting myself into, but I was determined to see it through,” says Mhlongo. “As many of us do, I thought I understood what wheelchair-dependent individuals go through. I can tell you now, what an eye-opening experience this was,” she explains.
Small tasks, that many of us carry out without a second thought, had to be carefully considered and planned. For example, making coffee and getting back to one’s office with that hot coffee, without having bumped one’s elbows along the way. “I never knew that uneven paving could affect me so much!” exclaims Mhlongo.
The Wheelchair Challenge prompts the participant to consider all the small changes that might make day-to-day life tasks a little easier for the wheelchair dependent. “I was amazed at how my colleagues came up with suggestions and ideas to make our office more wheelchair-friendly. They also asked thought-provoking, relevant questions, like what I would do in the event of a fire,” says Mhlongo.
As a result of this Wheelchair Challenge, Multotec has started making changes to its premises to make it more wheelchair-friendly, with scope to continue making these changes in the future.
Multotec extends gratitude to Little Eden, both for arranging the challenge and for all the work that the organisation carries out. “We are proud to be part of this experience,” concludes Mhlongo.
