A new screen fastening system supplied to an iron ore mine in Western Australia by Multotec has resulted in the mine saving approximately AUS$ 1 380 000 annually. The mine experienced significant downtime because of the reduced screen panel life span, which was caused by panel failure due to the panel locking mechanism dislodging. This had the effect of incurring unplanned shutdowns and led to the premature replacement of panels and fastening systems. Multotec was commissioned to help solve the problem.
Fastening system engineeredMultotec engineered a new screen fastening system – the ERX Fastening System – a proven reliable and robust fastening system designed for heavy-duty applications in the iron ore industry. This solution overcame the mine’s challenges regarding the panel locking mechanism by introducing locking and clamping strips that are joined through the panel.
The system is quick and simple to install and remove, is a direct substitute for the C-lok system, and can be used on 1X1 and 2X1 panels. Also available for rubber panels, the configuration means that the clamping strips do not allow movement of the panel and locking strip.
In addition, change-out predictability was improved using Multotec’s wear indication system. This was confirmed during a 10-week inspection that verified the expected 21-week change-out cycle.
The installation of the ERX systems resulted in a lifespan three times longer than previous systems, an extended mean time before failure (MTBF), reduced maintenance-related downtime, increased plant availability, and decreased consumables costs.
