Showcasing Innovation at Multotec: TP WB backplate
This innovation was developed by Zelda Zonneveld Junior Draughtsperson, Multotec Manufacturing, TCS.
Problem statement:
We kept having issues with our TP WB backplate, with repeated cracking at the corner of the backplate, into the WB section. We ran tests and found that this was due to the pressure on the backplate. Replacement units are expensive to manufacture, especially as this requires wire cuts, and the manufacture and grinding down of new vents, to fit the TP’s profile. new lengths of wire cut, and new vents made.
Due to the backplate cracking we could not run orders, resulting in a delay in product delivery to the client. The old design backplate also takes about ± 2 to 3 months to manufacture.
Description of innovation:
To avoid having to order a complete new backplate, we made a separate insert for the RP section and vents. This means that we only need to order a new WB backplate, and the TP insert can be bolted onto it.
Cost of innovation:
Cost of entire backplate to make once off: R120 000
Cost of the TP inserts & vents R60 000
If the backplate cracks again the purchase price will be R60 000
Cost saving R60 000
Benefit to our customers:
This innovation saves time in making the backplate because we no longer have to machine a solid block and don’t have to remake the TP inserts and vents each time.
