World Conference Sampling and Blending 2019
"Multotec and TEMA-SIEBTECHNIK set a good ex-sample."
The 9th World Conference of Sampling and Blending (WCSB9) was held from 6 – 9 May 2019 in Beijing, with a record attendance of 450 delegates!
Multotec once again attended this biennial event which was held in Asia for the first time. There certainly is an interest in sampling in China, but a lot of work remains with regards to educating Chinese clients on good sampling practice and raising the standard.
The Conference received a lot of publicity, if the hordes of photographers and constant flashing lights were anything to go by. International sampling consultants and other ‘regulars’ gave most of the presentations, and some obligatory presentations by locals reflected a big gap in sampling knowledge. A local sub-committee has been set up to assist the Chinese industry in addressing this matter.
We shared a booth with Tema – Siebtechnik, and some 20 other exhibitors were also there including well-known names such as FLS, IMP (now bought by FLS), Scantech, Scott, Iteca as well as local companies. Many of the local companies were not directly related to sampling, rather providing solutions for, e.g. magnetic separation.
China is, potentially, a huge market with many opportunities as we know. 
However, there are ingrained regulatory barriers that need to be overcome before more effective sampling business can be done in this sector. Siebtechnik is also finding this sampling market very competitive, after many notable successes on large dry sampling stations in years passed.
At the awards ceremony, another good Multotec supporter from Australia, Dr Geoff Lyman, received the prestigious Pierre Gy gold medal award for his work on statistics and as it relates to the sampling theory.
