News From Multotec Zimbabwe Managing Director, Ashley King.
Multotec has been present in Zimbabwe since 1978 – initially represented by REG Tuckey Agencies and then by Multotec Zimbabwe. The latter was formed in 1995.
The country is witnessing a high level of investment – mostly in mining, agriculture and infrastructure development. These investments have been since the change of government in 2017. Several projects in platinum, diamonds and gold, that had been on hold, have now been triggered. Projects include: streaming of new mills and flotation; expansion and optimisation; debottlenecking which will lead to expansion; new DMS plants and tph plants, and a PF pipe lining project.
In all the above, we have been fortunate enough to secure orders for cyclones, screen panels, samplers, mill liners or ceramic linings. Our success is the result of teamwork within all the Multotec business units as well as our collaboration with project houses.
While our business model remains simple and relatively risk-free, the average businessman in Zimbabwe has a myriad of rules and regulations to negotiate when transacting. There are 3 different exchange rates, 2 different forex auctions, incoming forex retention (RBZ takes 40 % at the official rate), import and export permits, trading and operating licenses, and many more frustrating (and at times debilitating) regulations.
In 2021, Multotec had its best year ever in Zimbabwe and we see this trend continuing in the years ahead. This has been made possible by offering high-quality products and good technical backup, as well as having a strong local presence.
When the Multotec started in 1973, the company’s approach was built around teamwork and good communication. We were not immune to problems and mistakes, but it was the way we approached these problems that set us apart - and this was recognised as a strength by our clients. Multotec was seen as a company they could rely on to “fix” problems.
Success in adverse conditions is possible but it requires all stakeholders to pull together, and so we leave you with a quote by Ratan Tata (founder of the Tata Group): “If you want to walk fast – walk alone. But if you want to walk far – walk together".
