Getting to grips with industrial centrifuges

Used to separate solids and liquids from a mixture via centrifugal force, industrial centrifuges are used for numerous applications across a variety of industries. These industries include but are not limited to, food & beverage, wastewater treatment, pharmaceutical, chemical, and mineral processing. In some instances, industrial centrifuges are used in the Canadian oil & gas sector for applications like separating oil and water, removing solids from drilling mud, and separating crude oil into different fractions.

Multotec is one of the largest distributors of industrial centrifuges in Canada and Australia and offers a range of Siebtechnik Tema industrial centrifuges. Centrifuges in this range provide an economical and efficient solution for dewatering large quantities of solids to low final moisture. Some of the benefits of these industrial centrifuges are their minimal space requirement with little energy use or residence time. All Siebtechnik centrifuges for sale are available across Canada from Multotec branches in Edmonton, Montréal, and Vancouver, and throughout Australia from Multotec branches in Brisbane, Mackay, Newcastle, Newman, Perth and Emerald

In both Canada and Australia, the use of centrifuges is government-regulated by agencies like food inspection agencies and environmental protection agencies. Regulations and standards governing the use of industrial centrifuges are set by government agencies. These regulations and standards cover the use and disposal of centrifuge-related waste and byproducts to ensure environmental protection and public safety.

Siebtechnik centrifuges are distributed across Canada by Multotec Canada.

There are numerous benefits offered by industrial centrifuges when compared to other separation methods. These include high efficiency, low operating costs, and the ability to handle large volumes of material. In addition, their ability to separate a wide range of substances, as mentioned above, speaks to the high versatility inherent in industrial centrifuges. Essentially, industrial centrifuges should be regarded as powerful tools in most industries. They are a versatile and cost-effective means to many industrial processing challenges.

In the Canadian and Australian mineral processing industries, industrial centrifuges are used for a wide range of minerals, and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) applications like coal, copper, uranium, mineral tailings, mineral products, polymers and effluent, among others.

Increasing separation efficiency with enhanced discharge quality

The Siebtechnik range of centrifuges from Multotec Canada and Multotec Australia is designed to increase separation efficiency for all particle sizes as well as reducing waste. They also enhance discharge quality, have excellent wear resistance, and use the latest automation solutions and instrumentation to improve operating reliability. So, in summary, our range of centrifuges are ideal for recovering valuable minerals from slurries, reducing plant waste, improving the quality of discharged contents, and reducing their environmental footprint.

Mineral processing benefits of using a centrifuge

There are several benefits to using a centrifuge in the mineral processing industry. These include, but are not limited to, reduced thermal drying, a compact design, increased separation efficiency for all sizes of particles, and reduced waste with optimised separation.

Multotec centrifuges and decanters

In addition to our centrifuge range, Multotec Canada and Multotec Australia offer a range of decanters.

A decanter, like an industrial centrifuge and centrifugal separator , is used for separating liquid and solid components but operates in different ways and for different purposes. The industrial centrifuge operates by high-speed rotation of a container, which causes the mixture’s dense components to the outside of the container and lighter components remain in the centre. A decanter is similar to a centrifuge but is horizontal and uses gravity to separate the mixture’s components. The mixture enters the slow-speed-rotating horizontal drum and solids settle at the bottom of the decanter and are discharged while the liquid component is drawn off from the top. Decanters are often used in dewatering applications. The important part is that both centrifuges and decanters are used to separate a mixture’s liquid and solid components.

Apart from these two conventional types of centrifuges, Multotec also offers the option of a collection of hybrid machines, which include both sedimentation and filtration process steps. More about centrifugal decanters

Siebtechnik centrifugal decanters from Multotec operate on the counter-flow principle. The way it works is that suspension is introduced to the centre of the bowl for separation, and sediment is conveyed via the scroll, which results in clarified liquid exiting from the bowl’s large diameter opening. For this to take place, the scroll rotates continuously at a speed different from that of the bowl.

Continuously adjusting the height of the bowl’s liquid level enables optimum control of the required separation process. This leads to the resultant ratio of clear liquid and dry solids. A proven gear unit is used to obtain the differential centrifuge speed between the scroll and the bowl, using V-belts as the standard drive arrangement. However, depending on the required rotating speed combination, the centrifugal decanter is equipped with either a single-drive or double-drive design.
